Yay, welcome back Bruce! Cats are lovely to have around, especially on these cold winter evenings (although one of ours is currently on my lap and farting up a storm, so it can be a mixed blessing at times).
I've just finished reading 1985 by Dominic Hoey. I'm a big fan from way back and have never understood why his books never get mentioned in any local shout outs and awards. His writing is very raw and he draws such intimate pictures of being poor, other, and children of poor/other. I find it uncomfortably confronting at times but that's what I love about his writing.
Yes I'm really enjoying it too! He does have a very distinct style but this is my favourite so far. It's also based where I grew up although 5 years earlier so that's very interesting for me.
I don't know why he doesn't get much notice, there aren't that many auckland novelist are there? Id want to read them if so! I love this stupid oversized grumpy city.
Mānawatia a Matariki! We have had a rough few months with some unknown medical stuff with my youngest (10) with so far an ECG, chest x-Ray, bloods & a head CT (thankfully all normal, but it means it remains a mystery). Next up is an EEG. She has to be sleep deprived - yay. 🙄 BUT it was still a wonderfully happy week for me because my gorgeous rainbow nephew was born & he is perfect. 🥰🌈
We had the sleep deprived eeg for my son, plan to get up too and have things to do - and be prepared, she might get feral with tiredness 😬. My 16 year old son did when that tiredness hit and I was annoying him to keep him up lol. My son has epilepsy which was diagnosed via the eeg, following multiple other inconclusive tests. Easily managed now. Hope your daughter and you get some answers, go well 😊
Mānawatia a Matariki! We have come to my parents house in levin for the day and I have just made a lemon meringue pie! Very excited to eat it. It also offsets my terrible week which started with me completely fucking my car. I went to reverse out of the garage, realised I needed to turn off the light but did not put the car in park 💀 I left the car door open so that completely bent back on itself. Sigh. I am sharing with you all so you can laugh at my expense, I feel it was a true silly bitch moment but I am ready to laugh. Sorta 😂
Oh no! Someone bumped into me and they were so stressed and I just said ‘oh don’t worry my car is garbage’ and they were so happy. And I’m like why does nobody do this for me when my car kisses theirs? That’s a long way of saying - we should all get to fuck up our cars 🤣
I backed into my own garage door while the door was opening (like I’ve done 300000 times), except sadly the door had not opened all the way and it had the audacity to smash the rear windscreen.
I cried not because I was hurt or traumatised, but because I felt so silly!! So, I feel you!
Manawatia a Matariki. Up here we celebrated Puanga last week with the ceremonial opening of the qr codes for our beautiful Ara rongoa. Last night we went to the premiere showing of Koka - a must-see movie by Kath Akuhata- Brown - and Kath and the main actor, Hinetu Dell were there. A brilliant night in a packed theatre. Opened by Laurence Wharerau and the whole audience got up and sang Toro mai to ringa.
Shark Heart is one of my favourite books from the past few years. It’s so beautiful, I love how the characters are so full of love in the hardest of circumstances. I also love how the author writes as if turning into a great white shark (and other creatures, spoiler alert) is such a natural thing that as a reader it doesn’t even seem that bizarre. I work part-time in a bookshop and whenever I try to sell it people I’m like “hear me out, the greatest love story you’ll ever read but the main character is slowly turning into a great white shark” 😂 Anyway, Mānawatia a Matariki!!! I’m going to watch the doco about the Titan tonight and let’s just say I won’t be needing lube later because billionaires sinking to the bottom of the ocean floor is all the foreplay I’ll need 💅🏼 and I’m currently reading Wolfsong by TJ Klune 🐺
Manawatia a Matariki! I knew very little about Matariki until it became a public holiday and each year I learn more and it is more meaningful.
This year the timing feels right for me as lots to reflect on - all the shit in the world, a family member who is physically very unwell, another person close to me whose mental health isn't good and then in contrast some wonderful things and people to celebrate. Can be hard to balance it all in my head.
Mānawatia a Matariki! Here's one of the best things I watched this week. It's about anxiety but is very funny (the words "...and I fucked a puppet" are spoken in the first minute so perhaps not suitable for kids)
Thank you Emily for including the link about the Regulatory Standards Bill again! I tried so many times yesterday but kept getting weird messages about link not doing etc 🤷🏻♀️
It’s done and dusted now, phew.
Forgive me if I’m repeating myself (old fart 😬) but I absolutely loved Dept.Q on Netflix. There’s so much good stuff in it, it’s funny, it’s tragic, it’s suspenseful. 5 stars from me!
The original Danish movies are great too, although subtitled, there’s three of those and the books are also awesome, there’s 8 of those! The interesting thing is that the first Dept Q shows that they are all quite different so it’s going to be like three interpretations of the same story.
Definitely true what you say about the old movies, they definitely don't hold up now, but at the same time managed to poke fun at the movies of the day (so many knees!!)
My husband came at me with a YouTube trailer for Spaceballs II the other day, which, Surely not! And yet...
It’s not a remake, it’s a sequel! With Rick Moranis in his first role in 30 years. The short trailer with the Star Wars writing is funny as hell. As is the Naked Gun trailer, somehow?!
Mānawatia a Matariki to the Writes whānau and all the wonderful FNC-ers here! Hello, Bruce!!
I was on Threads last night and there was a post talking about colognes and someone went "Hephaestus by VenusInvictus on Etsy because they described it as imagine getting railed by a blacksmith bent over the kitchen table and him fresh from the forge” and my first thought was: Emily has to know 🤣
A quiet Matariki weekend for us as the littlest is on Day ?? of antibiotics because of her ear infection, had to wfh the whole of last week and feeling lonely and unproductive so got all fingers crossed that we'll be all good again by Monday. Reflecting on how lucky we all still are to be able to work remote despite the challenges that come with it

Yes! It was short lived - he’s back at the neighbour’s place. But I’m hoping he comes back.

I’ve got it on my list! 📚
I'm reading it too. It's really engrossing!

Oh that’s scary Kate - I’ll be wishing you luck with the EEG and how wonderful about your nephew!! 🌈❤️

Thank you, that’s really helpful & good to know. 🩵

Oh that sounds wonderful Janine!

🤣🤣 yes billionaires getting it is so hot! But yes I so agree with Shark Heart. So so beautiful.
You have me sold on both sharks and wolves with this 🤣
I loved Wolfsongg so much I had to devour the entire series immediately. Absolutely amazing found family saga, TJ Klune is great for that ❤️
I hope you love it

Thank you for sharing this - I absolutely did not think I’d see a YouTube clip with muppets and cry!!!

I’ve heard it’s great! And yeah have heard there’s been heaps of problems with the website it’s so grim.
Matthew Goode is soooo out of his English country gentleman persona, it’s fucking awesome!
Have you seen A Discovery of Witches? I thought he only seemed a wee bit darker than that!
Oh yeah what happened to that show? I remember watching a few episodes.
Ooo where can I watch that.
Don't think it's on any of the main NZ streaming services now but see if you can find it online, it's great!
Loving it! He’s kind of his vampire from Discovery of Witches only less glamorous
Totally right? Like if that vampire got a bit bored and depressed so became a cop 🤣🤣
I managed to conquer technology and made a submission on the RSB...go me!

Your cat came home! Yay!
Short lived but it was lovely to see him!!

My husband came at me with a YouTube trailer for Spaceballs II the other day, which, Surely not! And yet...
Oh a remake of spaceballs?! Blasphemy!!

Omg I love Rick Moranis!!!
Beautiful, this post has filled my heart. Ngā xxxx
❤️❤️ aww thank you Helene!
Mate did you hear that a Spaceballs sequel is coming? Mel Brooks himself announced it!!
Oh wait you did! But it’s true!
Omg AI makes me think nothing is true 🤣 I’m actually excited about that one if it has Rick Moranis in it
I delved into The Buccaneers because of this post and, vibe.
I cheered for the girl on girl action. I wished I'd thought to write a novel called The Accidental Duchess. Definitely cute.
