After all our doomscrolling it's easy to feel despondent about submitting on the RSB. Especially when most of have done *so many* submissions recently. But this one is not only, as Emily so clearly states, soooo bad. It also appears to have fairly lukewarm support from National and even NZFirst (neither of whom likely relish sending so much power Seymour's way). So there's a chance this could end up being slow-walked, or modified to make it less harmful and lots of submissions against it would help.
Apparently AI is now being used to analyse submissions and responses to consultations so a human might not even read your carefully crafted arguments. AI tallies how many are opposed and how many for. I wonder how you write in order to get AI to notice?
Hi Emily, thank you for including info about the Regulatory Standards Bill submissions - I've been waiting to hear your advice, I really appreciate your posts about making submissions. I'll fully appreciate and totally lap up any further posts that focus on this topic, as I often send them to friends and family who might not have the bandwidth otherwise to submit, but certain want to support the kaupapa (against the Bill, that is).
“The nightmare of US politics. The Temu-equivalent nightmare in NZ politics. “
My fave line - I love my first chuckle when I read your stuff. It’s like, acknowledge the doom and horror but do it with a fresh perspective and some humour!!
Humour will get us all through all this…I feel lucky I teach 5 year olds… I get genuine laughs in my day job.
Thank you Emily for the RSB particulars. We'll get right on it. Thank you Josh for one of these best How to Stop Doom scrolling articles I've seen yet -- and delightfully relatable too.
Emily, your posts are rapidly becoming a highlight of my week.
I love this and just realised I've been unconsciously been doing a lot of what Josh has said (except for the deleting. I can't face the deleting!) Finding and connecting with your people in non scrollfest digital spaces is also a useful hack and in a side-link has actually been helping me with all these submissions. A frillion years ago I was invited to join an NZ writers Slack and it has become a safe haven where we have become trusted confidants and friends. We have channels for anything and everything from writing and career advice to procrastinating instead of writing. My favourites are 'One good thing today' 'pets' and 'scandals and drama'. We also have a channel called 'activism' where we share all the things to sub to, protests, marches and petitions. To avoid overwhelm we cover it as a collective and sub in for each other (see what I did there?) If you're trans or enby and don't have the spoons to justify your existance, we've got you. If you're exhausted from other mahi you can rest in the knowledge someone you care about and respect will be writing in your stead. I think its a gentler and more productive way of dealing with the doom. I saying that, I'm pretty sure all of us are sharpening our pencils in response to this particular slice!
Thanks Emily, I’ve been meaning to submit on this dumpster fire bill for ages - thanks for making it easy! And yes agree with Josh, substitution is key in my experience.
Great advice thank you! My breakthrough was Turn off Notifications for everything except ones you actually need (eg phone calls & messages from family)
Also I love Terry Pratchett and have just found a fantastic fb group about his writing. Not all of social media is bad - although most of it is addictive.

Yeah I’m really really hopeful people take a few minutes to make a submission - there’s so much good info out there.
