Excellent recommendations, the fattest but happiest year resonates with me and was a good reminder to pull my head in - the togs need to make more appearances! A book I read in almost one sitting just recently is The bookshop at the end of the world by Ruth Shaw. She runs an amazing and cute bookshop in Manapouri and her life story is incredible. So shocking, so many heart wrenching moments but a happy ending! One of the best autobiographies I've read.
It's definitely going to be my go-to present for the coming year! Also I should edit my original mistake, it's called The Bookseller at the end of the World :).
I’m reading it now! I bought it for my sister for Christmas and she was already reading it 😅 so she gave me her copy for me to read in iso. I couldn’t focus though so I’m only now getting to it! What a story. So great.
Happy new year Emily and Emily Writes readers (I think we need a collective nickname, like EW-ers or Writes Sprites or the E Dub Club).
This buffet is not helping my resolution to read more books and fewer internet articles, heh.
I'm currently reading a non-fiction book by Chris Hedges called War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. It's extremely grim, but it sure puts the problems in my life into perspective.
God Violent Delights was such a good article. I realised recently I’m becoming obsessed with people who are obsessed with serial killers and all the various justifications they make about why they like it or find it comforting, because those reasons are always so fundamentally disturbing when you dig into them. That article absolutely nailed the cultural obsession, everything that’s fucked up with it, and what types of people are “allowed” to be serial killers or their victims. How it has to be these brilliant misunderstood geniuses, otherwise we’ll have to face the ways ordinary people can be so cruel and horrific to others.

I second The Bookshop at the End of the World, amazing read! I went out and bought copies as christmas presents.

😂😂 E Dub Club is amazing 😂 that book sounds very grim but also wow what a title. I will look it up. Happy new year to you and yours Matt ❤️

Isn’t it? Sarah Marshall is amazing. If you liked that you will enjoy her podcast You’re Wrong About! Happy new year x
I just read The Safest Place. What an unbelievable piece of work! My heart absolutely breaks for those kids. Thank you for the link, just incredible.
Amazing eh? What a powerful and vital piece of journalism.
Gosh thanks for this great selection, look forward to delving in as we suffer this gorgeous weather inside with yet another illness 😅 of course.
Just finished a great memoir - On Chapel Sands. Found it at the tip shop and it was really fascinating and moving, highly recommend.
I’m sorry to hear there’s sickness! So much of it around. Nothing better than a great tip shop read xx
Thank you for the reading buffet, I’ve just read the demon river and my god the world is truly on fire 🔥
