Three Waters is another defining issue, and the answers to questions about that hint at views on cogovernance and relationships with Mana Whenua. I'm also interested in how councillors would balance growth and new infrastructure against maintaining existing and aging infrastructure.
Great list! And I think also asking about specific things important to your area. For me in Ōtautahi that's if they support the new airport in Tarras and their view on water quality/high nitrate water levels.
Councils in the main centres are required to implement MDRS and NPS-UD in their plan and decision making. So if you asked a prospective councillor if they commit to implenting MDRS and NPS-UD they will say yes, because it's a requirement under the RMA. But there are a lot of nuances around where the MDRS will apply, and whether the Council will go further than what's required by Government. So a good question could be 'how will you commit to implementing the MDRS and NPS-UD?' It would make their positions on a whole lot of issues really clear and wouldn't let them dodge behind something that they're required to do anyway
Great timing for this excellent list, I'm going to a candidates' meeting tomorrow night. In my experience you get a different view in person than you might from just seeing them on social media, and certainly from their billboards or leaflets. Body language is still a thing!

Absolutely agree about Three waters and that’s a great question about infrastructure!
That infrastructure question is so important!
Excellent list Emily.
Great resource and questions - thanks Emily
Also, FACT Aotearoa have been compiling a list on candidates with anti-vax or conspiracy theory links. https://twitter.com/factaotearoa
Oh FACT are so awesome eh?
This is great!
This is an excellent set of questions, thankyou!
Thank you!
Unrelated but you were awesome on The Project just now 😊
Haha thank you!!

Oh thanks for that Ansy! I will edit to include what you’ve said! Thanks so much that’s great intel.

Yes so true Quentin! It’s so good to go to meet the candidates meetings for exactly that reason!
These are such great questions! I recently interviewed Rebecca Matthews who is running in Wellington for my site (https://houseofboom.co.nz/blogs/news/meet-rebecca-matthews-fat-babe-great-politician) but I realise we didn’t actually talk solutions because we were too busy agreeing with what the problems are.
Love Rebecca. I used to work with her. She’s awesome.
Thank you, great list of questions! Do they have to tell you if they’re linked to VFF?
They don’t but I wouldn’t vote for anyone if they won’t answer the question because that would mean it’s a yes!
So much to think about here, thank you! It’s great to feel empowered when making these decisions.
Thank you! ❤️
