Rest up and take care of you. Life is exhausting right now. Feels like we are living in a bad alternative universe nightmare right now. So rest up. I love your work xxx
I came here to say something like this! We love you, Emily, and you deserve to take sick leave when you need it and at least 4 weeks of annual leave when you choose...
Emily you don’t owe us ANYTHING take a break if that’s what you need - we like what you write but my own daughter quit art school because she realised she couldn’t create art according to someone else’s schedule. Be your own person with the associated ebbs and flows xxx
Those pronatalists seemed to be aware they might be giving comfort to racists or even racist themselves. But they just didn't seem to care (?)
I would nominate anything by Damian Grant as worse though. He makes me very queasy because it's all sophist bullshit but people take it seriously. And it's closer to home.
What did I just read?! I try to be pretty chill about other people’s parenting choices, but (a) those people are freakin weird, and (b) slapping a small child is not something we can casually disagree about!
Anyway, rest up Emily and take care of yourself. You and your whānau make the world a much better place just by existing ❤️
I have started the article. Those are their NAMES? Jesus.
I keep getting Facebook reels of large families (usually 7+ kids), despite having tried to hide them all so they stop coming up. I am the environmentalist having fewer children that they mention, so I bristle when people say "it's nobody's business if I have 12 kids" ma'am, have you not looked outside recently? Population explosion is everybody's business. I digress...
From the article: 'the problem is most acute in countries that are “technophilic, pluralistic, educated, where women have rights”.'
How funny that of all things, instead of making it easier for people to have kids (significant paid parental leave, better wages so families can afford for one parent to stay home, free pregnancy and birth care etc), the US goes with 'remove women's rights'.
Finished. That was...weird. All that genetic supremacy stuff yet the person having the babies can't get pregnant or give birth with significant technological intervention. My main question is how people can actually afford to have big families, but they went some way to answering that: neglect.
At the risk of giving you some additional worries, I just wanted to say something about my subscription. I recently got an email saying my credit card had expired, but it hadn't recently so I was a bit suspicious. (Maybe it did in the past year since last payment, though?) I clicked through the link from the email and thought the page it took me to had verrrrry little information on it, just a card number that was xxxxxxx then the last 4 digits (accurate) and then spaces for me to type in card number, expiry and CVC...and that was it. Already suspicious, this didn't make me feel much better about it not being a scam.
So I went to substack on a PC and updated my card details there instead. The space to do so actually looked similar to the email one, in that it asked for the same details in the same format, only with a lot more other information around it, so looked much more legit.
So yeah, that. Weird for substack to have made something that looks so scammy.
Jesus christ i got to the bit in that article where the dad open palm slaps Torsten Savage in the face and i have to stop. Unhinged is bloody right. Go, take sick leave! rest up if you can!
I’ve been listening to The Boy in the Water, too. I was struck by the informality as well, and thought it was due to the sensitive nature of the case and so they’re allowing a bit more room, but you might be right about the Southland thing 🤷🏻♀️ the last guy they had on who was the reinvestigator was particularly awful. So intentionally evasive and refusing to make judgement calls that were his to make when he was investigating 🧐
Anyway, I hope you get the rest and recovery you need while you’re taking some sick time xx
I finally got around to watching Red, White and Royal Blue as something of a nothing watch. Loved it, I mean it follows all rom com story arcs, so no guessing, but was nice for when I didn't want to think.
I am lowkey FURIOUS that I didnt think of Industry as a name for one of my tamariki ("oh! Industry" from Beaches would be the perfect origin story). Watching: Bodkin, Hullraisers, Fink, basically anything with a strong accent. Just listened to the Wind of Change podcast and HOLY SHIT and now I have so many theories about current musicians who I reckon are CIA agents (Lana Del Rey ahem). Hope you get lots of lying down time this week. Rest up angel cupcake 🧚♀️🧁
Something that resonated with me was, “ You wouldn’t just keep using a car without putting petrol in (or charging it)” . So we should be able to treat ourselves at least as well as a car! Rest and re- charge.
That article was the perfect mike drop for a week of rest and kindness to yourself. Shits super hard for an empath let alone one who takes the time to educate so many of us. Take care xx

My eyes kept getting wider and wider while reading that article, and I'm not 100% sure whether or not I've blinked since. Just completely bewildered.
All the best for the much-needed break.

I'll keep reading.

Take care, and rest, however that looks to you.

I started watching the doco about the 7M TikTok dance cult on Netflix last night. It’s… compelling and bonkers.
Ikr! I binge watched it last night and I'm still like wtf.
Rest. Rest. Rest.
Hope you have a lovely break and a real rest :) You absolutely deserve it.
Yip batshit crazy. Love your work. Please look after you. ❤️
