Kia ora e hoa mā. It’s Rāmere (Friday) so let’s get to it. I am doing OK. Trying not to feel anxious about that truck driver with Covid 19 who crossed the Tāmaki Makaurau boundary. Let’s distract ourselves with some chats eh?
I am anti-capitalist but I won’t lie and say that the Met Gala and MTV Video Music Awards has been the most welcome distraction. I know, I know - I’m such a piss weak socialist but I mean…life is hard and sometimes you just want to people watch from the comfort of your own hellscape.
In all seriousness, I’m quite sure Nicki Minaj posted about her cousin’s friend’s big vaccine balls to distract people from the fact her husband, Kenneth Petty, pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in California last week. And now he’s potentially facing up to 10 years in jail. Here’s a good piece on all of the wild things she’s said about the White House, swollen nads, and Drake.
And if you want more proof that she sucks - read about her and her Husband’s campaign to silence the person he sexually assaulted.
Other things that have been distracting me -
I love this edition of David Farrier’s Webworm - it entirely sums up how I feel about the horrible “system” of MIQ.
Roxane Gay has a newsletter called The Audacity and she’s publishing essays on Guaranteed Income and how it has changed lives. They’re all so powerful but When Breath Isn’t Enough is particularly powerful.
I love Dan of Yee Haw The Boys roasting David Asshole Seymour.
‘Per my last email’ and other ways to be passive aggressive at work – in Māori.
Tucker Carlson Melts Into A Zombie On The New Republic’s Damning Cover - “It’s an “apt and effective visual metaphor” of what the Fox News personality has become, said The New Republic’s editor Michael Tomasky.” Read the actual article here.
I love the Te Pāti Māori petition to change our official name to Aotearoa. I like it for a lot of reasons but also definitely because it would be easier when scrolling through countries because we’d be at the top.
Thoughts on Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs? Respect and Fight The Power at #1 and #2 is fine with me. And A Change Is Gonna Come is a fave too. But Like A Rolling Stone is not worthy of #4. And Smells Like Teen Spirit is definitely not worthy of #5. God I hate that song. They’re the only two songs in the top 20 I don’t like.

Now some questions:
How are you?
What are your plans for tonight?
What’s your favourite film from 1999? It was a good year for films. I have to show my age and say Varsity Blues was my life lol and no I haven’t seen it since.
What’s your favourite cover song right now? I am really enjoying the Years & Years cover of It’s A Sin (Pet Shop Boys). In particular the live performance at the Brits.
Not a question, actually a statement but this literally took me like eight hours to do this Friday Night Chats because I actually wrote something else but it was so depressing I thought I’d spare you having to read it but you might get it next week. But thank you to my CBC whānau for helping me with this and life and Mims for getting me out of bed today.
Christmas is in 99 days. Is it too early for me to put my tree up?
Love ya homies x
Magnolia! If you've never seen it you should. Best film that decade. Even Tom Cruise is good in it. Probably because he plays one of those utter douchey "player" instructors. "Make your best friend into your sperm receptacle" was a particularly memorable line. SO GOOD. Also Being John Malkovic was weird and hilarious.
I got into the car this morning and my son's dad was playing his fave Christmas song playlist, so you're not alone.
