Hi there. TBH I subscribe so you have freedom to write whatever you want, not cater to my 'bubble'. I love it all. If you're seeking inspiration, I guess that's not very helpful but I'd be totally happy if you just kept on doing you. I'm not a big commenter but I read and enjoy every bit of Emily Writes that comes my way.
I love the Friday night chats, knowing that other people are like me, reading it after the kids are in bed thinking how different Friday nights used to be.
1. Super stoked to have a way to directly support you writing !
2. Love saving up and savouring chunks of the FNC over the weekend when I'm desperate to read anything of substance, not withstanding my Media Watch date every Sunday, I definitely need your content in my life so I don't have to digest the utterly scrollable crap that appears, unwanted and uncalled-for at any time of day or night.
3. PLUS what would I do without your amazing curated content recommendations, when my menopausal body betrays me at night, and heaves me into sweaty wakefulness at the horrendous 2am-3am timeslot, when no normal human should have their eyeballs wide open?!
I can distract myself from my anger and frustration at losing valuable shut-eye and rejuvenating rest time by dipping into the links you conveniently add, giving us insight into what you've been reading.
I mean you do ALL the heavy lifting there, scrolling and searching material that seems made for me !
I am eternally grateful for that.
Yes I know that turning on the screen to read it like a furtive teenager, will only stimulate my retina and brain cells to fend off sleep, but there's only so much yoga relaxation and 4-7-8 breathing technique an aging lady can do in the wee small hours before she wants to scream and wake up the deep breathing heavily relaxed, darling partner beside me.
Haha thank you Bette. I am glad to help! And if it helps, I’m often writing and reading at that time too. The kids ruined my ability to sleep and now I’m just a boring old insomniac. I agree it’s absolutely impossible to sleep when you have someone snoozing away peacefully beside you! Thanks for being a subscriber x see you at 2am x
What's goin' on wit you, Emily? You're doing just fiiiiine. Like Amanda (below) I don't want you to cater to my 'bubble'. I can pick and choose, and not abuse - give us whatever it is you've got, as a good writer and person, it's all goin' on wit us as well and we need you to do this mahi so we don't have to
Following on from my earlier comment: I get how hard it can be to think of things to write about. As a subscriber, I'd be totally fine with you saying "I'm tapped out... nothing from here folks" as many times as you needed. The whole producing things to an inflexible timeframe is an industrial/mechanisation thing that should not be applied to creative work.
No requests, big fan, love everything esp your activism, pro-vax, just for lols hilarity and Bruce content but mostly your realness 😍 please keep just being you!!
Anything you’re happy to write I’m happy to read. I do enjoy the range of your topics and learning about things I might otherwise miss. From the serious to the hilarious-I’m all in ❤️
Everyone else has already said it, but I subscribe to read your voice and your opinions. Sometimes they match my own, sometimes I learn something. I laugh, I cry, I scowl (not scowling at you, never at you). Your newsletter truly does it all and the community of folk you've built around your writing keeps me coming back too.
Keep doing what you're doing. I'm so glad to be able to support you in a small way each month.
I remember reading a piece you wrote about weaning your baby off a swaddle. I've got the article saved somewhere and I have shared and read it over and over again. It's one of the best parenting things I've ever read. So your take on parenting is a yes. More of it with the humor, you have no idea how much that encouraged me for my first year as a parent.
I'm tired of hearing about covid. The rules are confusing and just make me anxious and I'm sticking with 'wear and mask, social distance and vacciantions' beyond that, I've got no desire to read about it. I've started skipping anything that says covid sorry.
I think you're not a fan of act or the tax payer union or most right wing politics. That's OK, they don't have my love either. I am however turned off by insults. Politics in this country has been shown to he a toxic place which is sad and discouraging. I'd hate to be written about in the way you have before.
Keep advocating for maternal health care and disabilities. Those things matter to me too and your words are thoughtful and interesting.
Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind ❤️ Covid is pretty front of mine for me so I probably still will write about it but hopefully anyone wanting to skip can do so. I can’t guarantee ACT or the TPU won’t infuriate me either but my hope is that with 12 pieces a month there will be at least one that resonates! Thanks for subscribing x
Echoing everybody else here, I enjoy reading everything you are writing! I love the variety and that you expose me to things I didn't even know I wanted to read about. I save your emails until my baby is nuzzled in and asleep on those days that he wont let me leave, and then I dive in and have things to read. I didn't know that I could also read your back catalogue! (I'm sure it was mentioned, but, that baby has stolen my brain power). That will keep me busy..
I hesitate to ask more of you because I feel like you already do so much, but if I’m honest I love the slightly surreal and hilarious fan fic/ meditation content - my favorite in this genre - “Helen Mirren lights Stanley Tucci’s cigar and winks” from August last year
Hi Emily. I'm so pleased to be supporting one of Aotearoa's smartest, funniest and most astute authors to do what they love, and it's my wish that this community allows you to explore and develop your craft without pressure or expectation. It is a privilege to read your work and share in your mahi - thank you!
I love all your work, both the heavy and the horny - we contain multitudes and when the world is so intense you need both! If you can talk about it, I’d be interested I hearing about your other mahi; as someone who wishes they had more time for advocacy/activism I love being inspired by what others are doing. Also echoing what someone else said - if you’re too tired to write on schedule that’s fine too! We subscribe so you have the funds and space to write what you need to when you can x
Along with ones I know you already follow (David Farrier, Yeehawtheboys, Virginia Sole-Smith, Simon Sweetman..) And thank you for putting us on to The End is Naenae! How good are newletters. And I pay for what I can :)
Thank you for the kind words and the newsletter recommendations! I can definitely talk about my other mahi. Good to know it might be if interest ❤️❤️ thank you so much for subscribing!
I'm echoing what many others have said: I subscribe because I enjoy reading what you have to say... Probably not helpful for generating ideas for what might at times be an onerous situation for you, but I hope you see it as an endorsement of you being you. Not everything (or even most things) have to be Big Things/Issues. You write so beautifully that it is an absolute pleasure to just trundle along beside you no matter what you are writing about.
It’s a huge endorsement and I’m super grateful. I always have things I want to write about so it was less about generating ideas and more about making sure people feel like they’re getting bang for buck? I suppose? I was really expecting - do less of this/more of that - so it’s been the loveliest loveliest thing just having so many nice messages ❤️

Ditto this!

Aww thank you! It’s a nice full circle because I’m often writing with my baby nuzzled in and asleep next to me!

Haha that is actually great to know because I sometimes think “is this too weird?” Haha
I think of it as smutty magical realism

Thank you so much Catherine. This is such a lovely thing to say. Truly. Thank you.
I choose to support an amazing wāhine. I support your mahi and what you do for the community.
Thank you so much Annabelle 😭
