This is so on point and beautifully written! I'm catching up on your newsletters after a busy few weeks and it's such a treat to sit in a cafe with a coffee and binge on your words and your humour. Thanks Emily x
I so get this - I know I should sleep more to sleep better but between work and parenting I can't bear to give up that precious time spent watching vampire teens on Netflix, tunnelling down pop culture reference or weird murder case rabbit holes on the web, popping bubbles on my phone, or another one of the myriad other "timewasters" that are solely mine alone.
I feel like I need to watch the clips on the Australian identical twins. Where do I find this? I’m intrigued.
I can’t sleep I’m hopeless at it since having kids. Even when it’s my turn to sleep and my husbands to get up when the baby wakes I’m anxious about the fact I’m not sleeping and thinking of all the dumb shit I haven’t done and must do. I’m so far behind sometimes I wish I could freeze time like Hiro from Heroes and get on top of my personal admin and laundry. Boring I know.
I’ve recently tried taking melatonin at night. I think it’s actually helping. Magnesium didn’t help me at all. A slice of cheese helps but the compromise is nightmares. An entire nights sleep would be incredible I can’t even remember what’s it’s like must be so refreshing.
Heh. I don’t think you need this book. It’s just going to tell you to stop your midnight meanderings and I feel you’re quite ready to give this alone-with-self time up yet ❤️
My kids didn’t have dangerous medical conditions to manage, but they still kept me revolving around them like a satellite most of the time (other than when I was working), and those quiet wee hours are just the best! I regretted staying up so late every gritty, coffee-fuelled, stressed out morning, but did it all again the next night. I definitely don’t feel the same need for that time now they’re a bit older (nearly 10/ nearly 14) as the parenting is way less intense. In the meantime you could try tricking yourself into sleep by listening to podcasts/ audiobooks (get the Libby library app if you don’t have it already, and comfortable earbuds) as you’re not staring at a screen so you’ll snooze off while listening (or enjoy a great story!)
Sent to me by my daughter (mother of two) "The ideal sleep environment for children is their grandparents' house" 😏

I must now go and find the podcast on Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction!
