For anyone really struggling, this quote is something I turned to after the NZ election - “It is our suffering that brings us together. It is not love. Love does not obey the mind, and turns to hate when forced. The bond that binds us is beyond choice. We are brothers. We are brothers in what we share. In pain, which each of us must suffer alone, in hunger, in poverty, in hope, we know our brotherhood. We know it, because we have had to learn it. We know that there is no help for us but from one another, that no hand will save us if we do not reach out our hand. And the hand that you reach out is empty, as mine is. You have nothing. You possess nothing. You own nothing. You are free. All you have is what you are, and what you give.”

― Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia

❤️❤️ bell hooks once said one of the most vital ways we sustain ourselves is by building communities of resistance, places where we know we are not alone. You’re not alone. You are part of a community of resistance.

I can’t even focus enough to read these but I skimmed and saw Elon living in a hole and that was good. Haha. As an American, with all my family still over there, I’m freaking out.

Emily - I am currently holding my 14-year-old daughter in my arms as she sobs and asks me what is wrong with people, what is wrong with the world? I feel ill-equipped to deal with this? What can I tell her? What do I recommend? Do you have any ideas for comforting rangatahi who are really upset by this? Ideas for action?

Be kind to yourself, it’s hard when you’re grieving and trying to support your child who is grieving. Take time for you as well. Remember we help each other, the government of any country is not set up for the people IMO. It’s all us and it always has been x Just look at the Jane Collective, women learned how to perform safe abortions, they saved countless lives. Look at Bisan’s bravery in Gaza. Look at the civil rights movement. No government has saved its people, we save each other.

Arohanui, I would tell her that there’s always things we can do to support each other at times like these. I put my kids in activity mode when they’re feeling upset - writing Christmas cards for prisoners, signing petitions on Amnesty International, making placards for causes they believe in (climate action march, Together for Te Tiriti), even going through their books or toys to donate. Action I think is often an antidote to hopelessness. Plus attending a rally and being with other people who care helps - there are rallies for Palestine every weekend, a hikoi for Te Tiriti next week etc. I also talk to my kids about their ancestors who were peaceful resistors - I talk about Rekohu where they’re from and Parihaka and all of the times people stood up for what’s right and won. Depending on her age I’d talk about why this election was complicated for people and why they may have chosen not to vote. I’ve had lots of chats to my kids today about how systems of government and democracy works and how they can change over time. ❤️
