Fully shameful. It's happening against the background into the coronial inquest into the March 15th killings which has revealed more details, each one of them a blow to survivors, grieving family and all who suffered. The Press keeps naming the murdering terrorist, I really wish they wouldn't.
But this Government is apparently all about Gun's N' Money and so "they are us" doesn't really fit their narrative.
This government is increasingly obsessed with wealth accumulation for the already wealthy and punishment of everyone else - it seems as though, by their standards, all except the moneyed elite have no feelings, no rights, no need for a safe and liveable life. I am increasingly disgusted by their arrogance, and the long-term damage they are creating for our environment and our society. How much nastiness does it take to get people to realise what's happening?
This is what National and ACT always do when they are in power and Winston loves his "baubles of power" so he is enabling and supporting them to do it. Remember the "Mother of all Budgets" in 1991? That punished the poor and beneficiaries and benefits haven't recovered since. Remember Key's cuts to community education? Remember how every National-led government harps on about boot camps being the silver bullet for problematic young brown people? Remember how Labour and Labour-led governments raised the minimum wage, benefits and superannuation every April 1? Has a National-led government ever done that? No, they have not! N-Act is behaving the same way they always have when they are in power - they look after their rich donors and all of their nasty little friends, and cut away at the welfare state, the public service and public health/education while giving handouts to private schools, landowners and the financial sector. I have never been able to understand how people can say that there is no difference between Labour and National when their behaviour in government is so different!
I'm a firm believer that the vast majority of New Zealanders want the government to do something that would be a tangible help to Palestinians. Unfortunately our government don't give a f*ck about 99% of New Zealanders let alone what's happening in Palestine and Lebanon. I haven't had a response to any of my emails demanding that they do something useful in over 6 months and expect they're just being deleted as soon as they're received. Chloe Swarbrick's questioning of Luxon last week about what concrete steps the government is taking with Israel showed how arrogant they are in the face of such depravity, and that the government has absolutely no intention of doing anything actual.
I did email Luxon about the Palestinian situation and what we could be doing about it. Received a standard reply from some lacky of "your email is important to us blah blah blah" but nothing will be done.
Thanks for writing this. I've always known National to be this awful, so none of it should be surprising? Yet, the open racism of this govt just keeps smacking. The inability for them to want to help Palestinians and the hypocrisy with our response to Ukraine is just so galling. Really no words but I really just don't understand how those people can sleep at night. So much blood on their hands.
