It’s a hard topic but such an important one. I’d like to mention that in nz, acc funds counselling for people who have experienced sexual harm. It’s called. A sensitive claim and while the initial assessment can be a bit intense, it’s worth it in the long run. It can be historic, and does not require a police report. I’ve been working with my counsellor for quite a while now and without her help I’d be a mess.
added to list for weekend! Awesome Emily, can't wait to listen. Sounds so necessary. On the other side of hard things there's always a reward, thank you for saying yes.
Sadly it is a very common theme in our disability history. The Royal Commission on Abuse In Care has revealed that sexual abuse (as well as every other type of abuse) was widespread in the institutions and residential schools and foster homes for disabled young people and adults.
Thank you Emily. I have a neurodivergent son (20yrs) who will not have difficult conversations. I am also neurodivergent and a survivor - well, currently learning how to be one. So I feel that I have missed the opportunity to have these conversations with him. There was a time when we were so close but now I don't know how to reach him. I will listen to the podcast - thank you again, for your bravery, you absolutely light the way for others to follow.
I have nothing insightful to add to the discussion, but just wanna say a huge thank you to all of you for creating this. It was a really powerful listen and I really appreciate you all being brave and vulnerable. ❤️
Also what a treat to be able to watch a podcast on YouTube with high quality captions, listening+watching+reading keeps my ND brain fully engaged.
Thank you so much for the feedback Eleanor. I hate being filmed but also love watching filmed podcasts! Go figure! Thanks for listening, watching, and reading! ❤️

Just to add to this, to find a counsellor who has this ACC contract, you can search on www.findsupport.co.nz 💜

Yes, it’s heartbreaking. This is why we do this, to try to stop the horrendous harm.
