I’ve had horrible experiences on Marketplace, people not turning up, all the ‘is this still available’ ‘can you deliver’ when I’ve said PICK UP only 🙄 BUT the one that stood out was a young couple picking up a double bed, they turned up when they said they would. They brought their Auntie with a roof rack on her car, and said to each other when they left, yay no more sleeping on the floor 🥰😭

I threw in some bedding as well

Honestly the stupid questions and lack of reading comprehension put me off selling things, even though money is good to have. Instead I let things build up into a shame pile and then I donate them.

I do this too! I have a shame closet right now that I really need to go through

"I'll send a courier to drop off the money and pick up the product. I just need your credit card number and ID". Block!

I'm still so confused as to how that scam is supposed to work.

Well done Ham! I thought it was a joke, but it's a real place. I especially like this description of it from Wikipedia:

"The area is so remote that—as with any location more than 400 kilometres (250 mi) from an inhabited area—sometimes the closest human beings are astronauts aboard the International Space Station when it passes overhead"

Once again I learn something useful from Emily Writes Weekly.

Stand by for astronauts wanting your stuff next. We are doing a life simplification process right now and I'm doing Trade Me while my wife is doing Marketplace. We swap stories. Just to day I seem to have been talked into driving across town to deliver a pair of snow chains. "Pick up only" is often taken as meaning, "But you'll post or deliver if I pay quickly and then ask nicely?"

I didn’t realise it was actually a real place either! Yeah good work Ham 🤩

And omg this was sooo timely - having just sold some stuff on trade me - I can so relate to all the inane questions that are already in the blurb as well as requests for measurements that make no sense. Thank you Emily! ❤️

Hard relate.

I had “ You could drop it off here”.

No thanks Jan, it’s free and I said pick up only.

Has Ham seen the story about the man who is the first known person to swim at Point Nemo?

I feel this so hard. I am always selling stuff on Facebook and getting abuse from people because I don’t hold items for days or weeks on the off chance that they will pick up. My tactic is not sending my address until they are on their way to pick up to avoid heaps of randoms having my address. First person to pick up gets it

You left out:

Where is pick up?

when it's right there in the 3-4 line description.

Also that annoying scam that is suggesting that a courier is going to turn up at your door with the cash to pay for it. Uhuh, sure Jan. I just say "no, that's a scam" and then block them.

I buy things on MarketPlace but I haaaate selling things. Luckily most of my trades have gone well. I sort of end up getting into a conversation with the person and it helps reassure me, and them, I hope, that we are both genuine.

Very frustratingly funny. I’ve never used Facebook marketplace. Now I never will. 😂

Maybe sometime can explain this to me, but why isn't trademe a publicly owned utility? It makes a lot of money, and that money just goes to its overseas owners now. It could run with minimal fees and the money it makes could be used to fund good things! I don't know why the govt didn't buy it

Can you imagine having to wait 4-6 months for your item to be delivered though...

🤣😂so ducking true! I have literally just been through this, with two $20 items! But after about nine of the above selection of mad-makers, a lovely man came and bought my laundry tub for $20. Didn't even try to haggle me down once accepted... usually, it's yeah I'll take it. $5 OK?

I'm sticking to TradeMe...

Just like the rest of the internet. A wild west of fraud, greed and lies. (But there I am, still on Fb yakking about NZ pottery and grumbling about politics... )

Haha. Glorious.

🤣🤣🤣 Yep, and the lower the price is on something the more they dick you around - trying to get rid of free-but-still-good stuff can be a nightmare. FB local groups are usually better, I think because everyone knows everyone else and reputations are at stake, but ymmv.

Plus you know they're close enough to pick it up, or maybe you can drop it to them.

I long ago stopped selling things online. I'd rather put them out on the street with a free sign than put up with the asinine questions. But that doesn't help with the rent does it, maybe it's easier to sell your body??
