I just want you to know that as a government employee I'm going to use even more te Reo, all the time, and so are my colleagues. They can make us swap the names around but we'll be damned if they'll stop us using Aotearoa's official bloody language.
I just want to say that there are some of us (over 60 ish and an in-comer) who are so proud of the way te Reo is/was being normalised in New Zealand. Kupu, waiata, te ao Māori .... so much to embrace and love.
This is brilliant, but scarily real. A lot of folks don’t have a coherent response. It’s just a vibe. A bullshit one but a vibe all the same. There’s also this bizarre idea that Māori are unfairly advantaged by the naming of things in Te Reo. Presumably an advantage that somehow never shows in any health, life expectancy or economic statistics.
I’m 67 and sooooo anti Annes, or Karen’s! I wish our country’s name was Aotearoa, rather than some Dutch hybrid name. As I drive around the country I try and practice my Te Reo placenames pronunciation, and I wish it was taught in schools when I was young!
I especially enjoy how Te Pūkenga apparently confusing for old boomers so it must change. Because old boomers are totally the key demographic for Te Pūkenga obviously so therefore it’s essential they understand it’s name.
I just got a letter about my car rego and it literally has both the te reo and english on the envelope. also when i opened the letter it was clear it was about my car so.... there was no confusion.
I’ve had similar conversations in the past about pronouncing Tauranga correctly. Same person would pronounce Paris as Pareeee but Tauranga was always TOWELranga.
English is my second language and I'm actually stoked that I get to learn Te Reo Maori just by being exposed to the words in normal daily conversations and in signs and on telly etc. Like, I am struggling to understand these people who don't want to be able to learn words in other languages. Also I really really want NZ to be renamed as Aotearoa. Who do we need to vote for next election for that to happen? I feel like Chlöe can get it done
lol. My mum is pretty good but even she has told me that “it makes it hard for ESOL people” and I’m like WTF mum? If they can’t speak English OR Maori, how does it make a difference?! I think her idea was that all English speaking countries should have the same set of departments and ministries all with the same name. Good luck with that mum!
Very good. It is going to be a very long 3 years. Some won’t see it through. I like the Coalition of Cruelty. I’m going to use that. It is hard not to feel despair with the cruel and bizarre policies this coalition are kicking off with. But I think we need to rally and fight back. Humour and satire are strong weapons. Keep it up.
probably my most favorite newsletter of yours that I've read. the I'm-not-racist brigade contributing and upholding white supremacy on the daily. Started learning te reo remotely here in the States almost 2 years ago and won't ever stop, it's my amazing once-a-week connection to home.
